
Ceramic vs Carbon vs Dyed Window Tint: Garner NC Guide
Three films, three very different jobs
Almost every tint quote you get in the Triangle comes down to three film types: dyed, carbon, and ceramic. They can all be cut to the same darkness, they can all look nearly identical in the parking lot, and the price spread between them is usually two to three times.
That gap confuses people, and it should. Darkness is the one thing all three do equally well. Everything else — heat, longevity, color stability — is where they separate.
Dyed film: darkness and privacy, not much else
Dyed film is a polyester layer with dye suspended in it. The dye absorbs some visible light, which is why the glass looks darker and why the cabin feels more private.
What it does not do well is block infrared. Most of the heat you feel coming through a window is infrared radiation, not visible light, so a very dark dyed film can look aggressive and still leave your dash hot after an afternoon parked at White Oak.
Dyed film is also the one that fails visibly. The dye breaks down under UV, and after two or three NC summers you get the purple cast and bubbling people associate with cheap tint. Cheapest up front, most likely to need redoing.
Carbon film: the honest middle
Carbon film has carbon particles embedded in the layers instead of dye. Those particles reject a meaningful share of infrared — noticeably better than dyed, short of ceramic — and because there is no dye to degrade, the color holds.
Carbon does not turn purple. It typically runs a decade or more without color shift, and it has a flat matte finish that a lot of people prefer over the slightly glassy look of some ceramics. It is also non-metallic, so it will not interfere with your phone signal, GPS, or a toll transponder.
For a daily driver that lives in a garage or a shaded driveway, carbon is often the film we point people toward. It is the option where the money-to-performance ratio makes the most sense.
Ceramic film: the one that changes how the car feels
Ceramic film uses non-conductive ceramic nanoparticles. Those particles are very good at rejecting infrared while letting visible light through, which is the reason a light ceramic can outperform a much darker dyed film on heat.
That last point matters in North Carolina more than most places. You do not have to go dark to stay cool. A legal-percentage ceramic on the front doors will do more for your commute on I-40 than a dark dyed film that gets you pulled over.
Ceramic is non-metallic too, so no signal interference, and it holds color and clarity for the life of most vehicles. It is the priciest of the three — that is the honest tradeoff.
Heat rejection is not the same as darkness
The number worth asking about is total solar energy rejected, or TSER. It accounts for infrared, UV, and visible light together, which is the whole picture. VLT — visible light transmission — only tells you how dark the film is.
Two films at the same VLT can perform completely differently. A 35% ceramic and a 35% dyed look the same from the sidewalk and are not close on a 95-degree afternoon. If a shop only talks about percentages and never mentions TSER or infrared rejection, they are describing the look, not the performance.
All three types block essentially all UV. That part is standard across the board, and it is the reason your dash and seats stop fading.
Where NC tint law lands in 2026
North Carolina requires 35% VLT or more on the front side windows, the back side windows, and the rear window on a standard passenger car. NC-approved meters are allowed a small calibration variance, so a reading a couple of points under is generally treated as compliant — but 35% is the number to build around.
If you drive an SUV, truck, van, or minivan, the state treats it as a multipurpose vehicle, and there is no darkness restriction on the rear side windows or the rear windshield. The front doors still have to meet 35%. Windshields are limited to non-reflective film above the AS1 line.
One change worth knowing: as of December 1, 2025, tint is no longer checked during the annual safety inspection. The law itself did not change. What changed is that the inspection station is no longer the place you find out you are over — roadside enforcement is, and that is a worse way to learn it.
One more thing people miss: film VLT and factory glass VLT multiply together. Your glass already blocks light before any film goes on, so what gets measured is the finished combination. That is why we meter the glass first instead of quoting a percentage blind.
Picking without overspending
- Dyed: a short-term lease, a project car, or a budget that has to be a budget. Go in knowing it is a two-to-three-year film.
- Carbon: a daily driver that is garaged or shaded most of the day. Long-lasting, color-stable, solid heat performance.
- Ceramic: a car that sits in the sun at work, a long commute on I-40 or I-440, black interior, kids in the back seat, or anyone who keeps vehicles a long time.
The people who get the most out of ceramic are the ones parked outside all day — Clayton and Holly Springs commuters sitting in an RTP lot from eight to five, or anyone whose car bakes in an uncovered driveway. If your car lives in a garage and comes out for a fifteen-minute drive, carbon will make you just as happy for less.
When it is not worth it
If you are selling the car in six months, skip ceramic. If your factory glass is already heavily tinted from the rear doors back, the upgrade there is mostly cosmetic — the front two windows are where the heat comes in and where the money is best spent.
And if your current tint is bubbling or purple, removal is part of the job. Old dyed film comes off in pieces and takes time — any quote that ignores existing film is not a real quote.
